Rich and Mike are back! This time they have another top ten episodes? Bottom ten? top 20 and this is the bottom 10? I have no idea what's going on. Let's just call it: Rich and Mike talk about TNG episodes they like.

I know it will be shot down by both of you but the holodecks Sherlock Homes 2 parter where they cleverly trap a scene in a scene for the characters to live out forever and Picard’s meta reference that who knows if our “reality” is but fiction in a box.

My take on The Game is that Data saving the day in the Wesley episode is not only not detrimental, it's actually a positive that Wesley doesn't solve the problem on his own. It almost feels like an acknowledgment of the big problem with Wesley early on, in Season 1 especially - so many episodes are just solved by Wesley Crusher being a super genius who singlehandedly solves everything when the rest of the crew is stumped, because he's better than everyone at everything. Here, he realizes he's out of his depth and his best course of action is to keep the threat occupied while someone more qualified works on a solution.

The funny thing about Darmok, is it makes me think about real world languages. Like as much as people say the idea of a language being based on metaphors and allusions is kinda silly.. lots of human cultures kind of did that. Like the easy example to call out is something like Japanese Kanji. Every character is supposed to be a representation of something iconic. And they can string together complex sentences and thoughts out of those characters. With meanings and compounds that arose as new ideas came into their culture where multiple singular kanji would combine to create a new concept. Like how in Darmok itself "Temba, with arms open" meant to receive or welcome something. But "Temba, with arms open" combined with "Shakur, with closed fists" described together the concept of flanking and pouncing on the monster of Tanagra in the episode. It's just kinda fascinating because as "silly" as it might sound to an English speaker... it is very human at the same time. And makes you marvel at something like how the first Portuguese sailors and merchants who came across Japan must have tried to communicate with these very different language concepts.
DifferentialTim 9 օր առաջ
you COULD have a language that communicated feels and situations but you still have to have specifics when advanced as how could you build anything complicated and have schematics ect. Its ok for animals to grunt hello or warning stay away , thats enough as they dont evolve past this point as all other animals on this planet do except for overly complex humans.

Regarding the language of the aliens using English words: It is possible the universal translator could only partially translate the language, thus you get a mixture of the alien language and the English words.

Even viewing it as a teenager I understood the point of "Darmok" episode was the limitations of the universal translator - it translates the Tamarian words fine, but the meaning of the metaphors cannot be translated and understood.
Tim Welch

For darmok it is possible that their written language is way different than their spoken one. Maybe more complex thoughts and ideas are done in written language. Or they also have some kind of telepathy that only works with each other.
Herbert West

Considering how much of English is built on metaphor it's not really that big of a stretch for me to imagine an alien language built entirely on metaphor it's fine as a story telling device. Hell look at traditional Chinese writing which is a thing that still exists.

@кадмій exactly. It does seem that more complex thoughts and stories were transcribed. We just assume that written language and speaking language is always the same but this doesnt have to be the case

I wondered if their education consists of reading scenarios based on history and mythology, and then cite those scenarios using verbal shorthand. The alien captain writing a detailed log, and at the end, his XO cites that event as "Picard and Dathon at El Adrel"

In Darmok, the translator works to translate their speech into English, hence “walls fell,” “arms open,” and “eyes closed;” they just don’t understand what the references are or some of the language structure. But the language itself was already translated.

You know, I always thought that the reason the aliens seem to be speaking english in the Darmok episode is because the translator is, in fact, working correctly, but since their sentence structure is so odd, and apparently meaningless to outsiders, that the translation is worthless, because we can't understand the metaphors.

I think Rich and Mike got really close on the Darmok commentary (around 1:04:00). I tend to just accept the difficulty of translating the Tamarian language as a given (beyond the UT spitting out perfectly-synced equivalent English pronouns, nouns, adjectives, conjunctions and prepositions). But, if I want to examine it, I think the explanation is basically that Picard doesn't understand the language well and is wrong to call it "metaphor." Data and Troi are much, much closer to understanding the structure of the language (they use the terms "referential" and "imagery," and they mention very different brain structures the Tamarians possess), but because the nature of the language requires intimate knowledge of the hierarchy of images and stories from that culture, their theoretical knowledge is useless. In fact, I think the episode is not exactly about communication, but the difference between theoretical knowledge and practical experience when facing uncertainty. If the problem were really just communicating, then the Federation could have sent some Vulcan science officer (speciality: linguistics) to mind-meld with Capt. Dathon, and then send Guinan in to smooth over any misunderstandings. Instead, they send Picard to lead discussions, the experienced diplomat captain who has taken his fair share of risks in carrying out the Federation's mission. This episode is one of the best because the setup is that it's just another theoretical problem to be overcome (a lot of lesser TNG episodes are resolved by some sort of Deus Ex Machina created as a result of Data or sometimes Wesley's superior theoretical knowledge). Instead, the crew are left off balance because of uncertainty around Picard's situation, and must rely on experience to resolve the conflict. Data and Troi have between them loads of *theoretical* knowledge - Data by virtue of him being a computer and Troi by virtue of her listening to and analyzing others' experiences. Theory is vitally important, but only when applied; throughout history, much progress has been made in the absence of theory, only to be refined by a theory after the fact. But theory without experience is just kind of a limp noodle. On the other hand, Picard tends to be the most balanced with theory and experience. For instance, Picard possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of various ancient historical sites, but he doesn't just read about them: he goes out on archaeological digs! When Picard is kidnapped and essentially sealed off from his crew, he is forced to rely on his experiences to reason under uncertainty. In that case, he builds an ad hoc theoretical understanding of the Tamarian language in his head, one that is actually quite flawed, but is functional enough to open up peaceful dialogue between the two civilizations (again, Data and Troi understood the structure and grammar much better, but had zero vocabulary). At the resolution, the bond between the Federation and Tamarians is forged because of the literal experiences of Dathon and Picard forging a bond against the El Adrel Predator. A more theoretical medium - diplomatic cables sent via subspace, for instance - may have resulted in some sort of mutually beneficial arrangement, but not the kind of bond formed through the experience Picard and Dathon had. Whereas a lot of lesser TNG episodes are resolved when Data and Geordi determine, through careful examination of theory, that they need to rephase the dorsal tachyon emitter coil or something, this one argues that theory alone doesn't do much without experience, and that the Good Life that the Federation represents is ultimately dependent on both. PS: I think the Tamarians' brains allow them to access all sorts of arbitrary structural concepts in their brains such that they reason non-linearly and declaratively rather than procedurally. I think it's very likely that people on their starships can recall more or less hundreds of different scenarios that they experienced in training, and the only use of "metaphor" would be to relate some novel situation to one of the ones they already have catalogued on a moment's notice. There's some evidence for this in the way that Data and Troi explain the language, and it explains their futility in understanding the language without first experiencing the images themselves that give rise to the language.

Yeah I’ve never hated Wesley, either Mike. STNG does cop a lot of flak, that I think is fairly unjustified, including people’s lack of relatability for Wesley. I think he is one of the more well explored characters, and the only thing I found a little awkward are SOME of the scenes with his mother, however overall, their relationship is not too awkward and quite well explored. The Game was an excellent episode at the time, and I now realise that many of the well written episodes include Wesley or centre around him.

The only reason that Riker doesn't immediately bone Minuet is because Picard shows up.

Geordi Laforge was always unlucky in love for one reason. Non-disabled people don't want to see disabled people fuck. And they certainly don't want them to reproduce. Before you all call me a horrible person, I'm disabled. In the movies, Laforge regains his sight, one way or another. Because it's so important for abled people that disabled people get cured. He was happy with the way he was. Sure, every now and then he admits it get him down. However, he was happy with who he was. He made peace with it. It made him even more extraordinary (if that's possible). His peers are the best of the best. Even with his difficulty, he stands even with them. But that was a good enough for the fans. Such things don't happen in real life. I will be disabled until I die. So the problem isn't his, it all of you (who insist he wasn't enough)!

In any episode he's in you know he'll figure out the unthinkable thing, or know exactly what to do when the adults don't; or he'll get the crew into trouble so they have to dig him (and thus themselves) out of it. The only way they could get rid of his character was by making him a Q like super-being. If I watch any episode where he's featured, I skip past his scenes.

man, i appreciate the Darmok episode so, so much more nowadays, trying to communicate with people from other cultures that hardly speak english, than i even did back when i first saw it. there is actually a lot of communicating with "metaphors" going on, from song lyrics, over movie scenes to videogame mechanics. but i gotta say, dont they drop a line that the universal translator can translate words from their language but not the meaning? that'd be why half of it are english words.
