The impression I got with Possessor was that the assassin essentially likes her job, and it has become her life. She seems to take pride in it, and her handler remarks that the two of them have "worked hard" to get her where she is. But it is so different from the "real" world that she can't really inhabit it anymore. Mike says he wants to see her "spiralling down"; she asks for time off, gets it, but immediately realises she just wants to go back in. Plus, at some point (or maybe always) she began to enjoy the act of killing. I don't think she cares about the money. I get the impression she barely spends it, a sort of Leon type situation.

Possessor - I sort of disagree with both Mike and Jay a bit here. I think Mike was wanting it to be a different film to what it actually was. With Jay's comment about the gore, I thought the point *was* that it revelled in it, because Vos was actually starting to revel in it. We hear at one point that she was supposed to shoot the lawyer at the start, so the fact that she stabbed him so brutally suggests she was looking for some kind of visceral thrill. I suppose it then stretches the believability that they would send her back in if she's becoming unhinged, but I think the close-ups of the gore were very much in keeping with the theme.

The Queens Gambit was offensively boring and predictable. The main character had no redeeming qualities that would make her a believable human or someone worth watching for. Disliked how they always set her mannerisms to fulfill the male-gaze and very forced ways. That faux ‘’chaotic sensuality’’- especially in that first episode when she looks into the mirror supposedly’’disheveled’’ 😂 - gave me second hand embarrassment for the actress who had to play her. This show gives off a teen girl’s wattpad fantasy vibe

I dont think "I'm Thinking of Ending Things" is about the janitor fantasizing about a woman. I think the girlfriend character is representative of his conscious mind leaving him. The entire meta-narrative happens in the janitor's mind as he sits in his truck; moments from his life flashing before his eyes, intertwined with a conversation between his ration and emotional mind as they progressively diverge from each other. As I've pieced it together, I think the janitor was a very intelligent person, but unfocused. The kind of personal who would excel at trivia, but doesn't hold a high level job. When he was younger, he was extremely interested in talented artists and writers, but could only produce rough imitations of them, never really achieving original creation himself. Basically he was smart enough to appreciate the arts, but not talented enough to be a creator. He went off to college, leaving his small home town and his high school (that he'd later work at). Unfortunately he had to come back home to take care of his ailing mother. He ended up getting stuck in the town because of this and had to take a janitor job to make ends meet. As he's gotten older, he's also starting to lose connection with his rational mind, just as his mother did. His life is one of regret over his unfulfilled ambitions, since he was never quite able to break out of his home town and pave his own path.

Oh man, glad I didn't listen to Mike regarding Possessor. It's great!

I felt like I couldn't tell whether Possessor's empty rage came personally from Brandon Cronenberg or if it was just a stylistic choice, and I didn't know which was more disconcerting (probably the latter). I feel like Jay is giving the film too much credit. It definitely brushes up against big ideas, but I found their elusiveness less a matter of being subtle and showing over telling and more the director not having a firm grasp on what he wants to say, while primarily being interested in technical proficiency and visual flair. Style over substance, essentially.

POSSESSOR - during the part after they sync out of their bodies, Tov has a butterly ina frame which she killed as a child and was so guilty, she framed and pinned it. when she reflects on it for the post-checklist she mentions how she "REGRETS KILLING IT" and still feels "GUILTY FOR IT" /// but at the conclusion of the film, after she finally gets saved by Jennifer Jason Leigh (inhabiting as her son) plus the death of her husband, Tov takes her procedural post-test.....and this time, once she gets to the butterfly....she recalls its sentiments correctly but this time she no longer expresses any guilt for killing it. now, was this this her goal? to have no zero emotional ties to excel at her job? no, it was her boss Jennifer Jason Leigh's goal. that's why she went in as Tov's kid and the son gets shot. and the evil BOSS got what she wanted all along from the beginning. an assassin built with no real emotions since now her husband AND son are dead. no emotional ties, or any ties to the REAL WORLD any longer.... Jennifer's character is the only one who benefited in that job with all that blood shed

They did make an X-Men tv show. 2 in fact. LEGION on FX and GIFTED on Fox. Legion was great, and from what I hear, GIFTED was a ton of fun in a Smallville kind of way. So yeah, tv would be a great route.

Mike talking about Possessor was funny. I disliked it as well though. It felt like it took common elements from David Cronenbergs movies, but the end product is something much more vague and awkward.

By showing the female lead becoming desensitized to violence and showing the blood, gore, and hyper violence she performs on people in the movie, the people who are actually watching the movie are being desensitized and becoming that character. Kinda like some artsy fartsy self fulfilling prophetic nonsense.

I personally could not get attached in any way to Anya Taylor Joy's character in Queen's Gambit. It kinda killed the show for me since everyone else around her feels way more interesting whereas she feels like this shallow asshole almost the whole show. Any tension is also neutered by the sheer fact that she's the main character and within the same episode can face and overcome problems at whim.

“Ending Things” was just boring. all the academic references you looked up after doesn’t change that it was boring. i’m a software dev, my partner a molecular biologist, and we’re Lynch fans - so maybe we’re still too dumb for this...we wanted something other than boredom for 2 hours with an absurd ending.
