I've gone cross-eyed! Heaven's Gate! My word! Why let's just call this "Rich and Mike talk some more about TNG episodes they like" this has gone off the rails! Let's not continue to confuse ourselves. We should have thought this out more! Either way, Rich and Mike talk about more TNG episodes. Maybe they'll talk about more in the future?
One thing I can tell you as of right now, neither Rich or Mike have watched a minute of Star Trek Discovery season 3 so please stop asking. Mike and Rich have only watched the first episode of Lower Decks and then abruptly stopped, never to return to it.

I've never understood Mike's feelings on the Parallel Universes thing. Each one is different, and the way I think of it, every time you wonder what if, there is an alternate universe where that happens. It's a sobering reminder that the rest of the universe keep turning, even if the primordial ooze that eventually leads to human beings is destroyed.

Unlike his dad who kind of shunned the idea of only being known for Star Trek, at least for awhile until he didn't, Adam Nimoy became all about Star Trek because nepotism probably. He directs TNG as his first gig in showbiz. Later he directs Babylon 5 which is a parallel course. He makes a documentary about his dad called For the Love of Spock. Then a couple of years ago he marries Terry Farrell who starred on Deep Space 9. He doesn't seem to be an especially competent director. I'm basing that on the fact that he only has 33 credits as a director since 1992 when he started and he has done as many as 3 episodes for a series but mostly he does 1 episode and they never ask him back. There's an interesting tidbit on his wikipedia page. He's been married 3 times. His 2nd wife was named Martha. No last name. Apparently she died. No date when that happened. I guess Batman couldn't help her because her name was Martha. It's an interesting history this guy has.

Worst episodes of TNG : pretty much any episode with Lwaxana f**king Troy..... Brent spinners makeup did indeed come off from handling things and transfer....there’s an episode with the prisoners souls floating in the storm, when data repeatedly hits a console 3-4 times it gets covered in make up from his hands Denise Crosby wanted to leave basically because she was a ‘yes, captain’....’phasers locked captain’ kinda character, and it wasn’t what she expected, or wanted more of a role in general I believe

26:20 Another thing worth noting. Season 1 Riker wouldn't have tolerated any of the shit Picard was pulling. As Picard mentioned in The Pegasus, he picked a first officer who would stand up to him and put the safety of the crew above all else. If Riker had been picked up from Farpoint he would have put a stop to Picard's strange orders before they even reached the neutral zone.

I love the star trek Voyager episode where they find a micro wormhole and gets into contact with an out-of-time-sync'd Romulan scientist. It put the Romulans into another light cuz it was not some zealous military person, but a scientist - albeit a paranoid-as-fuck Romulan like they all are. And then they find out he was a romulan that was somethingsomething 50 years or some such in the past and he sadly never had the time or chance to communicate onwards the information he got to the federation on Voyager's behalf since he'd died, I think it was 4 years prior to Voyager taking off.

A key point of "Conundrum" that they didn't discuss: The characters' fundamental nature doesn't change, even with their memories and 'identity' blocked or erased. It's actually a pretty controversial stance from the perspective of philosophy or neuroscience.

Problem with Relics, is they waster two A stories in one episode. The Dyson sphere is a one off and deserves almost a 2 parter and scotty a single story so the whole crew is involved instead of off worrying about some other plot to fill the running time. Also, it seemed when the crew met scotty, all the hellos ended quickly like he wasnt that important character and him and Georgie were left to argue. Love TNG, but i noticed lately that watching it in 2021, the brilliant ship sets all carpeted and thrum of the air con also seems to have a almost miami vice sort of pastel look, not much! just a little dated. I never noticed before and it was made 87-94, and Love the ship and chemistry in the actors and so lucky they made 181 episodes and the Inner light and almost all watchable stories and some even from season 1 & 2 and even Farpoint as a opener is patchy without new actors but the effects and Q and overall, a good starter and some other good ones too if you forgive to "finding their way" and some of the sexism and all that but still way ahead of its time and many shows now are right on with issues.

talk about missed opportunities: at like 50:20 they show the clip of Riker and Worf double phasering whatever alien was trying to attack the station, and it COULD have been that Riker double-taps this fool and then Worf tackles him to the ground and beats him unconscious. But instead Worf gets worf'd and has to contribute by firing from a crumbled mess on the floor, without truly redeeming himself as a WARRIOR.

Actually that was Garak. Sisko's plan kinda sucked if you recall? It was basically hope they don't figure out the data rod is fake... DS9's resident tailor wasn't prepared to take such a silly gamble, his intentions were always to assassinate the Romulan senator and frame the Dominion. All Sisko did was delete a log he spend 45 minutes recording... and it was glorious!

Say what you will about "Skin of Evil", I actually liked it. I know it's an exit episode for Denise Crosby, but I liked that the person being killed off as a demonstration of the baddie's power was not some random ensign but someone we cared about. Logically, if this wasn't a TV show, you wouldn't have a head of security who lasts for years and years (nor a bridge crew that remains stagnant and un-promoted for a decade). The desire of Denise to leave allowed Trek to explore that for once. I think the episode mostly stinks because of all the standard season 1 problems (lame set, SFX, etc.). The ending is good, too, because holodecks allow this new way to do memorials.

Peter Segrin

It just occurred to me while listening to the "Yesterday's Enterprise" bit that Tasha Yar's character arc in this episode kind of mirrors that of what became Kira Nerys. In DS9, the concept could be greatly expanded upon because of the serialized format. I could be wrong, but I recall something about Major Kira originally was supposed to be Ro Laren. Either way, DS9 is my subjective choice for best Star Trek series but it only works because of TNG. I never got into Star Trek until I was in my early 20s (32 now) so I appreciate Rich Evans' perspective as to how TNG still holds up and is a show that any newcomer could get into. I started with TNG ended up watching the spinoffs and fell in love with DS9. Sisko's first encounter with the Prophets/Wormhole Aliens is one the franchise's best acted and written hooks. As an audience, we had to try and understand what a noncorporeal existence with consciousness would be like in order to grasp the gravity of Sisko's explanations. The pilot touches on sorrow, loss/grief, duty, and linear existence. The best Treks are the ones that make you both think and feel. By the way, did anyone else see parallels between Gul Dukat and Amon Göth? LOVE your content RLM! Fellow Wisconsinite and former Milwaukee native. You are a modern day Siskel and Ebert channel...without the condescension and moral grandstanding.
