After three long years, Jay and Josh finally decided to attempt to sift through David Lynch's return to television, Twin Peaks: The Return. In part 1, Jay and Josh mainly focus on the story and characters of the show.

I just watched that Twin Peaks explained video. It is not how you described it at all. Do I think it’s the answer? Not sure, but I think it’s very well thought out and is probably close to the mark

You guys should really give more credence to the 4.5 hour analysis. He himself says not to watch it if you want to maintain the mystery Lynch intended and expresses ambiguity in his feelings about giving people the answer. But seriously, his theory is far out and has an incredible amount of evidence, including those quotes you say are out of context but that he clearly uses as a from the source explanation of Lynch's philosophy and approach to making movies. As fellow commentators, the only reason not to watch it is to maintain the mystery or try to figure it out for yourselves because his analysis, though long winded, is the standard now.

After finally watching Twin Perfect’s video analysis, I have to say I think he’s 100% spot on and was able to articulate a lot of concepts (that includes but also goes further than the meta portrayal of tv violence) that I could only pick up on intuitively without the ability to explain. I don’t feel like Jay is giving that video enough credit whether it be smug or not. Just because Lynch says that he finds any interpretation of his work to be valid doesn’t mean that all of those interpretations were his actual intention when creating it. I believe there are correct interpretations of the work

I understand why people may have a problem with the Twin Perfect video. Even I was put off by the presentation style at first, but it’s such a respectfully researched and genuinely analytical theory they put together I can’t help but respect the sheer amount of effort put in. All of that paired with the highly informed interpretations really makes it, if anything, such an interesting video. Obviously, it’s just their interpretation, and the point of Lynch is not to “THEORY EXPLAINED!!!” it, but as a huge fan of the show, I really appreciate the video and can tell how big of a fan they are as well. Finally, everyone should come to their own conclusions, whether they would like to watch a 4 and a half hour long video to help them along their journey, or just ponder to themselves, avoiding fan theories all together. We’re all detectives in our own way, that’s the beauty of Twin Peaks and David Lynch. No one will be able to actually explain everything except Lynch himself, which will never happen and for good reason. Twin Peaks is one of my favorite shows and The Return is one of my favorite films, I’ll gladly watch/listen to anyone talk Twin Peaks for hours on end.

It's such a downer in a way but you guys have got to watch the whole "twin peaks explained" video. He really does just nail it. He also nails the fact that him nailing it is a downer. But to see it all laid out like that just gives me new respect for Lynch. Watching all of Twin Peaks again after having heard all of the theories was maybe the most fun I've ever had watching a movie or television show. Just my 2 cents.......

I've watched the 4 1/2 hour explainer. I found it interesting - it stimulated my brain. After watching about ten minutes of your video I am quite moved by the evident joy you take in The Return, and Lynch's work. I feel like there's a world where both can exist, maybe somewhere in the Pacific Northwest...

what sucks about me is i love lynch and his movies but i never understand them so then i feel like an idiot. like i didn't even think about eraserhead being about adulthood and being a parent until i think you guys pointed it out in the eraserhead vid. i just saw that bitch on stage and was like "wtf is supposed to be about". i love how weird it is i just hate that i dunno wtf everything is supposed to symbolize. i have in my head what i think it all means but there are those people who, when you talk about this show, will just right out fight you on it's meaning and its like ugh why do i bother trying to talk to people about this the answers i wanted answered about twin peaks was why laura and what for. was she just the victim of a possessed man and there was no real reason it was her? was laura the peace in twin peaks, the innocence and when she died it was lost? it was a small town and they were starting to dissapear irl so probably a connection there. then shelly's daughter is basically her, in a relation with an abusive piece of shit. it really does make sense the second time you watch it when they cut to the characters it feels like the show kept going on, like it never stopped if that makes sense? it doesn't feel like they were picked up and plopped down into an alien environment or forced to be there for 1 day. it was like they had always just lived there and we just cut to them living their lives in twin peaks.

Jay was 100% right about that 4hr explained video,, the guy came off super confident about his ideas and it made me hate the guy by the end of it, hes really up his own ass. He took the main theories and stretched it the fuck out and added his own theories on literally a million different details that were all saying the same thing and a lot of the points he made were reaching super hard. The guy was definitely up his own ass big time, it was hard to listen by the end.

I'm really glad you discounted the Twin Peaks Explained video. I watched an hour of it and tuned out. Made me feel as though I completely missed the mark on what the show was about. Lynch can get very weird and meta in his work, but I felt the whole TV metanarrative was trying so hard to take the soul out of the show.

@Metalane Dont get me wrong either- I enjoy slow cinema. Tarr and Tarkovsky are tow of my favorite directors. I just didnt find the emotional backbone to be present in the slow scenes in season 3. They seemed (to me) to be fueled by a desire to purposely flip the bird to the audience by Lynch, as the scenes were, more often than not, completely unrelated to the central story

Bobbies character didn’t change at all as much as y’all are talking about. In the first two seasons he risks his life multiple times to try and help save Shelly from Leo, and the drug dealing and even murder was all to protect Laura. Bobby was always a hero, it’s just more obvious because Americans are brainwashed into thinking drugs=bad cops=good.

The whole Tammy thing struck me too. Her oversexualization seems very deliberate to me, almost as a commentary on young beautiful actresses, that don't really have the chops, but get a pass from their sleezy bosses. Lynch likes to make his viewers feel uncomfortable, and right away Tammy was uncomfortable to watch, forcing me to think quite a lot about what she's actually doing in the show.

I loved the original Twin Peaks, it's one of my favorite shows, but I couldn't get through season 3. It just felt *too* different and like it had nothing to do with the first two seasons. The original seasons took place entirely in Twin Peaks and all of the characters had this believable charm and weirdness to them. Season 3 felt like forced weird awkwardness. That one shot of the guy sweeping the bar floor with nothing of importance happening for several minutes...that's when I just gave up on it. (the scene shows at 13:52 in this video actually)

Strangely enough, John Cleese's great and very VERY detailed audio commentary to the Blue-ray edition of _Fawlty Towers_ unexpectedly nails the main problem with _Twin Peaks._ He (Cleese) frequently points to specific scenes or dialogue which were meant solely as plot devices. And he makes this comment which I think sums this up: many screenwriters know how to write but they don't know (or neglect) the _plot._ I think this is precisely what happened here. Yes, yes, I know that the Standard Answer here is that it's the path that's important, not the goal. Sure, but this facile Joseph-Campbell-like truism only goes so far. _Twin Peaks,_ esp. the third season, is way too much like a Schoenberg music piece gone bad: it consists almost 100% of key changes with no vision. For comparison, think how much time and effort Richard Wagner spent on plotting _Der Ring des Nibelungen_ (despite all the key changes :-) ) Another problem is that Mark Frost has fallen for that cuckoo Blavatskaya, there is a _very_ long story there for which I have no room here. The third season otherwise is _extremely_ well directed and acted, it's a pleasure to watch individual scenes. But... as a whole it's not the league it could have been. The last two episodes are full of cop-outs. They are fun to watch but no more than that.

I see a lotta comments comparing the Peaks reviews with Jay n' Josh to the Star Trek reviews with Mike n Rich. After catching up with Twin Peaks I think the two shows may be more related then at first glance. Lots of crossover actors between the 2 series. Remember that time Ben Horne killed a Cardassian in his underwear? Ray Wise and David Warner have been several Trek characters in some of Mike n' Rich's favorite eps. Some legendary voice actors have also been in onscreen in both Star Twin and Trek Peaks like Tony Jay and Ian Ambercrombie. I found the scenes where Mädchen Amick gets abused very unrealistic as I am fairly sure she can shapeshift in to a space-sasquatch from the TNG episode: The Dauphin. Even the two main entities in the red room have Trekked the Stars. We all know the Fireman moonlights as Luxwanna Troi's butler and The Arm is...well pretty much the same but forward-talking in DS9. Surely there is enough for a 4 hour long video breaking down how Twin Peaks is just another Holodeck malfunction. Or maybe that Rumpelstiltskin decided to mess with more humans after he was done making poor O'Brien suffer. As one is wont to do. If you do make a 4 hour video make sure it is as obnoxiously smug as possible. Like Cubert Farnsworth explaining flat-earth theory while doing bad impressions of whoever he quotes - levels of smug. That is apparently the popular style for such videos.

One thing is sure. David Lynch is a romantic director. With a lot of love and fidelity for his actors. That's so RARE! And mouving. And Lynch send a lot of personal message to his co actors... There is also a lot of things about arms and violence, conjugal violence as you mentionned it. It is very feminist on many points. And there is this almost homeless woman story, where you realize than money can change people, but it also means that you have to do not reject people who have nothing..they are like you...

“We live in a dream” is using human language to convey that reality is something akin to fractals, or simply “is”, and how humanity has affected & been affected by their existence within “reality”. All forms of reality are constantly lying on top of one another, which is why they fade into one another during the show. Then just juxtapose & some other postmodern tropes, and TWIN PEAKS. BoB = mom Ps: watch his short THE ALPHABET. I believe he’s simply fascinated by language, how that constitutes our world, and beyond

I had those "explained" vids playing while i was doing laundry and some other stuff a while back, i get why jay would have an immediate reaction to everything mentioned in the beginning of the 1st vid given that he's a fan, but it's pretty disingenuous to listen to like 5 minutes and then write the vids off as "for a fact this is what everything means and this is what's happening". They were more a deep dive into themes and interpretations than direct explanations for anything. I get that fanaticism can blind people from others' pov's questioning the things they like, but I found them pretty interesting as someone who doesn't care much for the show's reputation/notoriety.

But it is really great. And it (of course) leaves more questions than answers. If you have the patience, your brain will thank you for it.
